  • Perform a monologue for class members

  • Workshop issues in contemporary performance

  • Option for this to be an invited Zoom performance

In between classes you will be getting both support and homework

 

  • Daily accountability thread - post about your daily physical and vocal work

  • Weekly Homework - post one video of yourself doing an exercise or monologue

  • You will get one video each week from Erin with feedback on your posted exercise or monologue

Weekly Class Breakdown

 

We will be doing a deep-dive into Patsy Rodenburg’s presence and text work. You will leave class with lifelong tools for understanding and playing Shakespeare AND an embodied understanding of how visceral, powerful, and exciting Shakespeare’s text can be.

 

*You will be working on monologues in verse throughout class - either one you choose or one assigned by Erin*

 

WEEK 1

Presence: The Physical, Vocal, and Energetic Requirements of Shakespeare

  • Intro to Patsy Rodenburg’s circles of energy: First Circle, Second Circle and Third Circle

  • The Present Body - physical, breath, and vocal warmups - breath support and freeing your voice

  • Trusting the text - everything you need to know is in the text

Individual work on exercises and text

 

WEEK 2

Forms in the Text Part 1: The Foundations

  • Iambic

  • Word: Rhythm

  • Word: Sound = Sense

  • Verse and Prose

Individual work on text

 

WEEK 3

Forms in the Text Part 2: The Structure

  • Thought

  • Sequential thought

  • Verse Line

  • Rhetoric, Antithesis, Repetition

Individual work on text

 

WEEK 4

Content: Imaginative and Emotional Connection to Heightened Text

  • Embodying the words  and owning everything you say

  • Meeting the words as yourself, as the character

  • How to do research that informs you as an actor

  • Making Shakespeare immediate and deeply personal

WEEK 5

Shakespeare Jam

Perform your monologue for your classmates and/or invited zoom audience

  • Issues in performance

  • How to do deeply connected classical work in a “contemporary” environment

  • How to show up to rehearsal day one

  • Taking direction while maintaining the integrity of the text and your connection to the work
